The Christmas holidays were cut short for Councillor Bill Christian, the new Chairman of Auckland City’s Parks and
Recreation Committee, to respond to letters and phone calls from members of the public with their ideas and preferences
for the replacement of the tree on One Tree Hill.
“The response has been tremendous,” said Councillor Christian. “I have sent out over 64 letters with still more to
write, and that didn’t include the telephone calls I had to return,” he said.
Councillor Christian says that from the public feedback received so far, the preferred replacement option is for a
Pohutukawa tree. “I’m sure everyone is aware that we are looking at all possibilities, because when we finally plant up
there we want it to survive for a very long time.”
The next step in the Resource Consent process is the refining of the proposal and application document. The document
will be then ratified by the Parks and Recreation Committee and by the full Council. Expected public notification will
be around mid-March.
