This summer, children and adults alike can experience animal attraction for the alphabet – at Auckland City Libraries’
new Special Collections exhibition.
Free to visitors to the Central City Library in Lorne Street from this Saturday (December 23), ‘Captured in print: an
alphabet of animals’ features a fascinating collection of animal illustrations from the 15th century to present day,
adding a wild touch to the old ABC.
“Whether based on scientific accuracy or wild imagination, the illustrations are guaranteed to enchant,” says Printed
Collections librarian Donald Kerr.
“From anteaters to zebras, there are animals for every letter of the alphabet and even images of mythical animals, such
as the griffin from the medieval French Missal.
The collection is a companion exhibition to the Auckland Art Gallery’s ‘Tooth and Claw’ show, which features animal art
from the gallery’s collections.
The library’s ‘Captured in print: an alphabet of animals’ runs until March 17, 2001 in the Special Collections
exhibition room on the second floor. Opening hours are 9.30am to 5pm weekdays, 10am to 4pm Saturday and 12pm to 4pm
Sunday.
