It was announced today that Manukau City Council has won first prize in the Ellerslie Flower Show Outdoor Gardens
section.
The Manukau City Face of the Future gold medal exhibit, designed by Nigel Cameron, is an amalgamation of symbols and
elements that reflect the best qualities of the City.
Flax, cabbage trees, puriri and toitoi capture the City’s native bush while the undulated lawns symbolise Manukau's
rural countryside.
The grasses, rocks and fountains surrounding the central space recreate the native bush, beaches and estuaries of the
region.
Waka shaped beams across the entranceway, native plantings and the central showpiece shaped like a kava bowl with paua
shell decorations, reinforced the City’s cultural diversity and South Pacific flavour.
Because the exhibit was situated at the main entrance, Mr Cameron said he wanted visitors to experience a welcoming,
celebratory feel.
Covering an area approximately 25 x 20m, the sheer scale of the design saw four people working on it full time for a
month.
The Ellerslie Flower Show is running until November 26 for Manukau residents wanting to view the City’s award winning
exhibit.
