On-Site Remediation For Rakaia Rise

Published: Wed 8 Nov 2000 03:45 PM
On-site remediation is the preferred option at this stage for bulk asbestos contaminated material (ACM) affecting five properties and a shared accessway in the Rakaia Rise area.
A special meeting was held by Council on Monday night to determine a resolution for this complex issue.
Options for on-site remediation are yet to be decided but will include partial removal of the bulk ACM and ‘capping’ with not less than 1m of clean soil.
Manukau City Manager Colin Dale said "The special circumstances of these particular properties meant the Council was concerned to assist the affected residents in this case.
“The way is now clear to move forward and ease residents’ concerns. On-site remediation is an accepted and established option given that in this situation bulk ACM poses a very low health risk for normal residential activities."
A further report has urgently been requested by the Council detailing on-site remediation options but Council officers will firstly meet residents to discuss these.
