GET FLAGS FLYING, SAYS MAYOR
More New Zealand and Canterbury's red-and-black flags should be flying above Christchurch, says the Mayor, Garry Moore.
He made the point after Christchurch businessman, Ernest Duval, wrote to Mr Moore saying he "sees dozens of lonely flagpoles sitting atop buildings stark and empty." Mr Duval says he counted 12 unused flagpoles in Hereford Street alone. He has just erected a flagpole at his Manchester Street premises and he says he had "lots of positive comment within the first hour." Mr Moore says: "I think it is a good suggestion. In the United States many people fly their US flag and we should be more patriotic here. "I would like to see more red and blacks and the New Zealand flag flying. I would appreciate some feedback on this idea," he said. Mr Duval suggested a Fly Your Flag Campaign directed at flagpole owners in the inner city. "This will add to the vibrancy of the skyline and may engender a little more pride in our town."
