Process re Council Vacancy

Published: Thu 10 Aug 2000 10:42 AM
The council is now faced with the sad task of replacing Cr Raffills on the Auckland City Council.
On August 24, 2000 it will be considering this matter.
The options are that the council hold a by-election, or appoint a person qualified to be elected to the council.
(To qualify a person must be over 18 years and on the electoral roll.)
Should the council choose against an election and to appoint a person instead, there is provision in the Local Government Act for 5 percent of the electors of the Avondale/Roskill ward to require the council to hold a by-election.
