Lowered Water Consumption Figures Bring Pats On Back From Auckland City
Pats on the back are being distributed to Aucklanders for their water conservation efforts in the past year.
A Metrowater report acknowledges that annual water consumption for Auckland City decreased by 0.5 per cent compared with
the 1998/99 year. This is despite ongoing development and population growth in the city.
Auckland City works chair Cr Doug Astley says Auckland City’s annual water consumption is the lowest of all Auckland
Region’s local network operators. “This is a good result,” he said.
“The messages are getting through and people are making an effort to save water. More than 380 consumers have used
Metrowater’s water conservation advisory service which offers on-site advice to people who ask for information about
ways to reduce water consumption. This service was only launched in January this year, so again, it’s a very encouraging
result.”
Cr Astley says reduced consumption is also due to less water being lost from the city’s water reticulation system. “This
shows that the ongoing work being done to replace and improve our pipelines is bringing the results we are seeking,” he
said. “Unaccounted for water in June this year amounted to 13.83 per cent, which is well ahead of Metrowater’s target of
reducing water losses to 16 per cent.”
