Plans afoot for bridge walk
All going according to plan, it should be possible to walk over the Auckland Harbour Bridge by 2001.
Transit New Zealand is preparing a brief for management of a bridge walk – similar to the operation in Sydney. The document should be available in early September, when expressions of interest will be called for.
Transit National Commercial Manager Daniel Thompson says that a bridge walk would be a real tourist asset for Auckland, and that several groups keen to be involved had already expressed interest.
“We know from last summer’s activities what a focal point the Auckland Harbour can be, and a Harbour Bridge Walk provides the opportunity to really show off the area.”
Mr Thompson says the forthcoming BMW marathon – which will be run over the northbound clip-on lanes - will be a good test for foot traffic on the bridge, although the bridge walk would not take the same route and would not interfere with vehicle passage at all.
