Assistance Policy for Community Groups to be Implemented
A new initiative that will simplify the funding process is to be implemented by Auckland City next month.
The Community Group Assistance Policy provides a clear and co-ordinated structure to make funding fairer and more
transparent.
“Many forms of Council support are based on historic arrangements”, said
Chairperson of the Community Development Committee, Councillor Penny Sefuiva. “The new Strategic Plan means it is
appropriate these are reviewed”.
In addition to the new policy, Auckland City plans to increase its annual funding level to $322,000 allowing focus on
specific areas identified by council’s Strategic Plan.
The policy aims to support a wide range of events, projects, and accommodation costs for community groups within the
city. Feedback indicates strong support for the policy which is seen to provide new opportunities for community
initiatives.
Community Groups and Community Boards have been heavily involved in developing the policy, which contains strategies to
increase the number of funding applications from groups currently under-represented in receiving assistance.
This consultation process highlighted the need for Auckland City to discuss with the Government funding criteria,
priorities and contributions to community groups.
The effects of the policy will be closely monitored to ensure that the aims are being achieved. Feedback will be sought
from community groups and Community Boards will designate a member to liaise and provide feedback on the policy’s
impact.
Councillor Sefuiva, says community groups have emphasised the need for clear, practical information and enough time to
develop applications and maximise their opportunities.
Council intends to ensure community groups are made aware of the assistance available and how to apply for it. Specific
initiatives are planned for those groups which do not currently have a high profile in terms of funding.
