Kids Run Stalls at Community Markets

Published: Tue 30 May 2000 11:23 AM
Hundreds of supporters turned out on Saturday 20 May for kids-only markets, held at three of Auckland’s community centres.
Avondale, Panmure and Mt Roskill Community Centres all hosted the markets at which local children were the stall-holders. An initiative of Auckland City, it was held as part of the region-wide Family Week.
Organiser of the event, Auckland City Community Advisor, Maryanne Davison, says the 100-or so young people who manned stalls went to a great deal of effort, spending time decorating their stalls and making up signs.
Jeff Iversen, Chairperson of the Avondale Community Board says: "We left the kids to it so they could develop their entrepreneurial skills and it was a great success. We'd like to make it a regular event and extend it to other groups as well, such as senior citizens."
