Asia Visit Launches ‘Study Auckland’ Initiative
An Auckland City delegation leaving today for Korea and Japan will use the week long visit to launch an initiative to
promote Auckland as a place to study.
The group includes the Mayor, Christine Fletcher, Deputy Mayor, Bruce Hucker, Councillor Richard Northey, Manager of the
Public Affairs and Advocacy Group, Stephen Rainbow and Caroline Lassiter, Manager International Relations.
Based around the 4th Asian-Pacific City Summit, the group will also examine how other cities have dealt with issues such
as congestion, waterfront development, bio-security and indoor arena facilities. At the summit the Mayor will chair a
sub-session and speak on promoting relationships between cities.
‘Study Auckland’, an initiative to promote the city as the study destination of choice will be launched while the group
is in Japan and Korea. The ‘Study Auckland’ campaign is the result of Auckland City working together with local
educational institutions to encourage international students to come to Auckland to study.
The trip is principally being sponsored and funded by the organisers of the 4th Asian-Pacific City Summit, which the
group will attend in Pusan, Korea.
Pusan is a sister city to Auckland, as is Fukuoka, Japan, which the group will also visit. While in Pusan, the
delegation will tour the United Nations Cemetery and meet with members of the Pusan Chamber of Commerce.
In Japan, activities include a briefing on the sister-city relationship and a visit to the Fukuoka City Waterfront
Development. Bio-security measures will also come under scrutiny by the group because of the high number of used cars
imported from Japan.
Auckland City Mayor Chris Fletcher says, the trip will be important in promoting Auckland as a great place for study and
business.
“Strategic city-to-city relationships are crucial to Auckland’s future. Looking to the future cities will need to
co-operate more closely and work harder at maximising their advantages.”
