Launch of 'Ki Muri Ki Mua - Millennium Walking' Mural
A major new mural in Auckland City will be launched by Judith Tizard, associate Minister for the Arts and MP for
Auckland Central, at a ceremony on Saturday 1 April at 10.30am.
The $25,000 mural, sited adjacent to Artstation, near the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Roads, was commissioned by
the Western Bays Community Board. It features the work of five local artists who interpreted the themes of natural
environment, cultural migration & settlement, and existing social environment at the turn of the millennium in the Western Bays Ward.
Community involvement is a major part of this initiative combining the efforts of several community groups to contribute
and develop their ideas along the given themes. The artists, Stephen Lovett, Robin Binsley, John Ioane, Barbara Joseph
and Miriam Harris worked in consultation with local residents and community groups including the Tagata Pasifika Trust
and children from the Westmere Primary School Maori language unit.
The highly coloured 40-metre mural is printed on PVC from computer generated and original artworks using commercial
billboard printing techniques. This is a major advance in the production of public murals and is a New Zealand first
using this innovative technique.
