Auckland City Council Release
The future use of Basque Park – Newton’s most important open space - will be determined over the next few months, with
help from the local community.
Designing the new look park will take place between now and July, and Auckland City wants to hear from as many people as
possible during this period. The first opportunity to have your say is Tuesday 14 March, with an open community workshop
at the crypt of St Benedicts Church, Newton, starting at 6pm.
Catherine Wilson, Auckland City project manager for the Basque Park design process, says that the workshop is the first
step in establishing community views.
“The workshop is open to everyone – it’s a chance for the people who use the park now, to tell us how they would like to
see it used in the future.
“Our team of landscape designers will also be at the workshop, listening to people’s ideas and discussing the design
process in more detail” she says.
Ideas from the workshop will form the basis of a park concept design, which will be displayed for public comment in May.
Further input from the public and community groups will help decide the final design before the Hobson Community Board
considers it in July.
